Should You Sign With a Talent Agency? A Model's Honest Take

I get this question a lot from newer models, actors, and creators, usually somewhere in a direct message. Should I sign with an agency, or am I fine handling everything myself for now. Having been on both sides of that question, as talent looking for representation and now as someone who runs the representation side through Calibre Associates, here is my honest answer.

What a good agency actually does

The value is not really about getting you jobs out of nowhere. It is about access, negotiation, and time. A good agency hears about briefs before they go public, negotiates rates so you are not doing that conversation yourself with every single client, and filters out the ones that were never going to pay properly or respect your time in the first place. That filtering alone saves a huge amount of energy.

What it does not do

Representation does not replace having your own reel, your own portfolio, or your own presence. An agency can put you in front of the right people faster, but the work still has to hold up once you are there. I still shoot, still post, still build my own portfolio, even while running the talent side of things. Signing with an agency is not a shortcut around doing the work.

When it genuinely might not be worth it yet

If you are extremely early, with little to no portfolio yet, most agencies including ours are not the right first step. Building a small but real body of work first, even a handful of solid shoots or UGC pieces, puts you in a much stronger position when you do look for representation, because there is something to actually represent.

What to actually check before signing

Ask how they get paid. A legitimate agency takes a percentage of what you earn on jobs they bring you, not an upfront fee from you just to be on their roster. Ask who else they represent and whether that overlaps or conflicts with what you do. And ask how often they actually communicate, because a good agency should feel more like a partner than a person you email into silence.
