Managing Talent While Being Talent: Lessons From Both Sides of Calibre Associates

When I started telling people I was co founding a talent management agency while still actively modeling and acting myself, the reaction was usually some version of, is that not a conflict of interest. A year into running Calibre Associates alongside my own work, my honest answer is that it has turned out to be the opposite.
Being talent makes me a better manager
I know what a rushed brief feels like from the other side of the camera. I know what it feels like when a client goes quiet for a week after promising payment on delivery. That firsthand experience means I do not have to guess at what talent needs from representation, because I am usually living the same thing on my own projects at the same time.
Managing talent makes me better at being talent
It runs the other way too. Reviewing briefs, negotiating rates, and seeing how brands actually evaluate creators has made me sharper about my own work. I notice things now, a vague brief, an unclear usage rights clause, a brand that has not thought through what they actually want, that I would have missed a couple of years ago when I was only on the talent side of the table.
The part that took adjusting
The honest challenge has been time, not identity. Some weeks are mostly shoots, some weeks are mostly matching brands with the right creators and following up on contracts, and figuring out which mode I am supposed to be in on a given day took longer to sort out than I expected. It has gotten easier with structure, but I will not pretend it was smooth from day one.
Why I am not choosing one over the other
People occasionally ask when I am going to pick a lane. I do not think I need to. Acting, modeling, UGC work, and talent management are pulling from the same underlying understanding of what makes a brand collaboration actually work, just from different seats at the table. Stepping fully into one and dropping the other would make me worse at the one I kept, not better.
If you are a brand or a creator curious about the Calibre Associates side of what I do, What I Look for When Managing Talent and Starting Calibre Associates go deeper into that. For my own work as talent, services and portfolio are the better starting points.
